Lambson pitches Fish to win

FARGO, N.D. – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (26-36) won 10-2 against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (32-27) at Newman Outdoor Field on Sunday afternoon.

For the second time in three starts, Mitch Lambson pitched a complete game victory for the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Lambson threw only 111 pitches over nine innings. He struck out five and allowed two runs (two earned) on seven hits.

The Goldeyes’ offence aided Lambson, belting three home runs. All nine starters had at least one base hit.

Wildfire threat closes two backcountry routes

The threat of wildlife prompted the province to close two canoe and backcountry areas on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, a vast area that butts up against the Ontario border.

A wildfire in Manitoba around the area of the Gammon River posed a potential risk to backcountry canoers and those citizens accessing the Bloodvein River corridor in Atikaki Provincial Park, from the Ontario Border to Kautunigan Lake, said a statement from Manitoba Sustainable Development.

A second wildfire in Ontario just east of Nopiming Provincial Park posed a similar risk to backcountry access east of Bird Lake. The Bird River-Elbow Lake canoe route and some 19 designated campsites in the area were closed.

The closures were in place until further notice, the province said.

A wildfire sparked by lightning was raging out of control Sunday, about 30 kilometres northeast of Bissett, also on the east side of Lake Winnipeg. That fire had grown from 140 hectares a week ago when it was first reported to 22,000 hectares by Sunday.

Three charged with attempted murder

Two men and one woman are in custody charged with multiple counts of attempted murder.

Winnipeg police released the update following the arrests Saturday.

The trio was charged in connection with a report of gun violence Wednesday.
Police were called to a home in the 300 block of Blake Street about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday where they found three gunshot victims. All have since been released from hospital.

Barely an hour after the first gun call, police were called to a call about a gunshot in the 600 block of Cavalier Avenue, where they apprehended three suspects and later charged them with seven counts each of attempted murder along with numerous weapons offences.

Police identified the three Sunday as Brad Wayne Baxter, 24, of Thunder Bay, Ont., as well as Kyal Alan Brown, 21, and Breanna Munro, 36, both from Winnipeg.

Police mum about College Avenue incident

Winnipeg police have confirmed they closed College Avenue between Powers and Salter streets Saturday, but they won’t say why.

The armed-response vehicle was brought in and at least 10 cruisers were counted at the scene.

A police spokeswoman said Sunday that the police presence was part of an ongoing investigation and that police wouldn’t release information about it.
