A model is making waves at Miami Swim Week with her everyday “accessory.”

Mara Martin hit the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swim Search runway show Sunday night — all while breastfeeding her five-month-old daughter.

The new mom strutted down the catwalk in a one-shoulder, gold bikini as she nursed her baby, who wore noise-cancelling headphones, a green bikini of her own and a diaper.

“I can’t believe I am waking up to headlines with me and my daughter in them for doing something I do every day,” Martin later wrote on Instagram.

The audience cheered the mother and daughter duo on along the way.

Martin says she was chosen as one of the 16 finalists for the fashion show.

“I’m so, so, so thankful for the entire team at Sports Illustrated for picking me!” she posted on Instagram before the show.

Following the show, Martin wrote: “It is truly so humbling and unreal, to say the least.

“I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!”

The Sports Illustrated Swim Search show also featured Paralympic snowboard athlete Brenna Huckaby, who walked down the runway with a prosthetic leg.

A majority of social media users expressed their appreciation for Martin’s family-filled strut.

“You are so so amazing! Thank you for doing this, from all breastfeeding moms everywhere!!” one commenter wrote.

“I’m so thrilled that @si_swimsuit is defining beauty in so many different levels ?? great job! Motherhood is beautiful,” another wrote.

Havin’ a heat wave — forever

Judy Waytiuk 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

When I acquired my seaside home years ago on Mexico’s Yucatan Gulf Coast, I learned instantly that the Yucatan routinely broils for most of the year with temperatures in the mid-40s; by mid-afternoon, the house interior soared to 35 C or so, in 90 per cent humidity, and stepping outside was like entering a blast furnace. The heat is punctuated periodically by wild thunderstorms that flood sand streets and turn roads into lakes for days.

Similar, in fact, to the summer we’ve had here so far this year.

I needed my air conditioning. But electricity in Mexico is devilishly costly, generated by burning diesel fuel, so I installed solar panels. My energy bills plummeted from around 6,000 pesos to 50 pesos — the Comisión Federal de Electricidad’s minuscule administration fee. I was no longer contributing to the world’s soaring carbon emissions and because I generated more energy than I used, and returned that power to the grid, CFE was burning a few less gallons of diesel. While lowering electricity bills, I was also doing the ‘right thing’, planet-wise.

Too little. Too late.

Rainbow Stage cancels Sunday performance

Rainbow Stage’s closing performance of Jesus Christ Superstar on Sunday has been cancelled.

The outdoor musical theatre announced on social media Saturday night that it was forced to make the “difficult but necessary decision” to cancel the 2 p.m. show due to high humidex values forecast for Winnipeg.

“We do not believe it is safe or responsible to proceed with an outdoor performance,” the post said.

Rainbow Stage said those with tickets could transfer them to a performance of Legally Blond: The Musical, playing Aug. 13 to 30, donate the value of the tickets to the company and receive a tax credit, or receive a full refund.

What if, instead of hearing the story of Little Red Riding Hood as it happened, we instead heard about the impacts of its actions?

For example, what might be the mental health of a grandmother captured by a wolf and experiencing identity theft?

How traumatizing would it be to be a granddaughter discovering the person she thought was her grandmother was an impostor?

Could a woodsman, while working to feed his family one afternoon, complete his job if he heard calls for help and a sleeping wolf stood between him and saving a life?

Banned drunk driver in crash charged with getting behind wheel again

A Winnipeg man who served time for drunkenly slamming a minivan into an off-duty police officer riding a motorcycle in 2023 is accused of getting behind the wheel, despite court orders.

Braedon Lee Gordon, 25, is charged with one count of driving while prohibited for an incident on March 2. His next court date is later this month.

Dan Léveillé, a veteran Winnipeg Police Service constable who was left with life-altering injuries in the June 14, 2023, collision, said he was not surprised to learn of the new charge.

“This is just another one of those stories, where a habitual, repeat offender is charged for the same offence. After having served time, his behaviour continues,” said Léveillé.

The stage appears to be set for Viggo Björck to make an immediate impact with the Winnipeg Jets.

A significant development occurred this weekend when Djurgården — the Swedish team Björck was under contract for the coming season — announced the 18-year-old was departing the organization under very positive terms.

“Viggo Björck has chosen to leave Djurgården to continue his career in the Winnipeg Jets organization next season,” the news release stated.

The announcement prompted vastly different reactions depending on your perspective.
