LEVIS, Que. — Fred Couples often has said winning at skins games is all about being in the right place at the right time and Geoff Ogilvy now knows it as well.
Ogilvy captured the 17th edition of the Telus World Skins Game on Tuesday at La Tempete Golf Club, taking a lion’s share seven skins’ worth $150,000 of the $360,000 Cdn purse.
It all came on the green of the 510-yard 14th where the 32-year-old Australian, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, two-putted the par-5 for birdie after Mike Weir, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Couples showed those in the massive crowds that even some of the best golfers in the world can sometimes fall apart.
Weir, of Bright’s Grove, Ont., assured Ogilvy a victory by sinking a par putt from two feet at the par-4 16th for $50,000. “The 14th was where it all kinda fell into my lap,” said Ogilvy. “I actually thought I had driven into the bunker. We don’t have much left,” said Ogilvy, speaking for himself and the others who had made the quick dash from the U.S. Open.
