Tickets for expanded Winnipeg Whisky Festival on sale
Whisky-loving lads and lasses in the city will surely raise a dram to news that the city’s biggest whisky fest has now expanded to two nights. The seventh annual Winnipeg Whisky Festival takes place March 1-2 at the Fairmont Winnipeg. As usual, more than 160 whiskies from all corners of the globe as well as a handful of other spirits will be available to sample at the event, which also includes a wide range of buffet-style food. Regular and VIP tickets (the latter includes a whisky seminar and early admission to the tasting) are available through the fest’s website at winnipegwhiskyfestival.com. Proceeds benefit the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

As he competes his final year as artistic director of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Steven Schipper is going to find himself an honouree at a few events, including next year’s Negev Gala, to be held on May 27 at the Centennial Concert Hall. Royal MTC has also launched an online tribute to Schipper at archives.royalmtc.ca, where you can find an exhaustive record of the shows Schipper directed for the company, from Brighton Beach Memoirs in 1986 to Heisenberg at the Tom Hendry Warehouse earlier this year.

Still Standing in Minto
Jonny Harris is on the road again with another season of Still Standing, the CBC documentary series that sees the comedian/actor visit struggling small towns across Canada to find the humour and heart in situations that feel dire. In an episode set to air Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m., he visits Minto, the last town standing on a old railway line in southwest Manitoba. Threatened by population decline, business shutdowns and a school closure, last year Minto was willed an unexpected annual sum of money by a former resident, earmarked for children’s recreation. With his typical blend of jokes and compassion, Harris talks to the townspeople about what they see for the future. You can stream Still Standing at cbc.ca/watch.
