Royal MTC’s Steven Schipper heading to Brampton

He may be exiting, stage right, from Winnipeg’s Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, but it’s not the final curtain for Canadian theatre’s longest reigning artistic director.

Steven Schipper is following up his 30-year tenure at Royal MTC with a role as executive artistic director at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, Ont.

He will begin his new post at the beginning of the 2019 season; his final mainstage show at Royal MTC will be The Cottage, a world première of a work by Winnipeg-born playwright Jake MacDonald, in April 2019.

“Brampton has offered me an exciting new opportunity to help them establish an artistic identity that reflects a young, energetic city, and to play an integral role in building a vibrant cultural centre for future generations,” Schipper said in a release.

Bill would enable disclosure of health information in some circumstances

The Progressive Conservative government has introduced legislative amendments that would allow a person’s personal health information to be disclosed without their consent, if necessary, to reduce the risk of them doing serious harm to themselves or others.

Health Minister Cameron Friesen said there have been incidents in Manitoba where health professionals were prevented from conveying their concerns to a patient’s family and friends.

He said the amendments will bring Manitoba’s rules in line with jurisdictions "that have done a better job of balancing the duty to protect personal health information with the need to notify loved ones in rare cases where an individual discharged from hospital can possibly present danger to themselves or others."

Bill 5 would amend both the Mental Health Act and Personal Health Information Act.
