Southwestern Manitoba hammered by hail, thousands without power amid more wild weather

Scott Billeck 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:12 PM CDT

It looked more like the middle of February than early July in parts of southwestern Manitoba, with streets, rooftops and yards blanketed in white on Sunday.

The white covering Killarney wasn’t snow, however — it was hail, left behind by a powerful storm that pummelled the community located about 250 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.

“It looks like a war zone at the moment,” Killarney resident Céline Dagg said on Monday.

Residents reported the hailstorm began around 5:45 p.m. and lasted about 10-15 minutes, leaving widespread damage in its wake.

Mayor takes RM to court to recover legal fees

Tyler Searle 4 minute read Updated: 12:00 PM CDT

Three years after winning a legal appeal against the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews, the area’s mayor has filed litigation to recover costs from the court battle that followed a coup by a group of former councillors.

Mayor Joy Sul filed a statement of claim against the RM north of Winnipeg on June 30, seeking indemnity for nearly $50,000 in legal fees she incurred while fighting council’s attempts to strip her of key responsibilities.

“Several years ago, I went to court because I believed the actions being taken against me were wrong and contrary to municipal law,” Sul said in a statement to the Free Press Monday.

“I want to be very clear about one thing: I am not seeking a windfall, damages, or any personal financial gain. I am simply seeking reimbursement for the legal costs I actually incurred while successfully defending my elected position.”

Bombers steal win on somber night

Taylor Allen 7 minute read Sunday, Jul. 5, 2026

HAMILTON — It was supposed to be a showdown between two future Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks.

Instead, it ended up being a somber night for the CFL.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers starter Zach Collaros was ruled out for the contest with an upper body injury after being hit from the blindside on the first play of the second quarter.

And just when you thought nothing could possibly overshadow that, Bo Levi Mitchell — the face of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats who was playing some of the best football of his illustrious career this season — suffered what appeared to be a serious left ankle injury in the third quarter after being taken down by defensive lineman Jake Ceresna for a sack.

Settlement reached in priest sex-abuse lawsuit

Erik Pindera 2 minute read 1:42 PM CDT

A man who launched a lawsuit in 2023 over sexual abuse claims has reached a settlement with the Archdiocese of St. Boniface, the Red River Valley School Division and the estate of a now-dead Catholic priest.

The Winnipeg man, now in his mid-40s, alleged he was abused by two priests — including Rene Touchette, who was convicted of sex crimes in the 1990s, and Léo Couture, who died before the lawsuit was filed. He says the abuse happened while he was a student around 1990-91 at the now-closed St. Jean Baptiste Elementary, which was in the Red River Valley division.

The abuse was alleged to have occurred while he was 10-11-years-old and a member of the local Catholic church, overseen by the archdiocese, in St. Jean Baptiste, a francophone community about 75 kilometres south of Winnipeg.

“The parties have reached a settlement,” reads part of a letter from lawyer Jordan Dobrucki, whose firm represented the man, that was filed in court.

Jets depth chart takes shape as off-season heats up

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read 3:44 PM CDT

That Kevin Cheveldayoff was expecting the pace of the off-season to shift gears came as little surprise.

And while it appears as though there are still a few questions left unresolved when it comes to the Winnipeg Jets roster this fall — including a massive one involving starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck and his future with the organization — the depth chart is taking shape.

When he spoke to members of the media at the conclusion of Jets development camp, the general manager spoke about prioritizing a new contract for restricted free agent Cole Perfetti, who filed for arbitration on Sunday in what was more of a procedural move than an indicator of how negotiations might be going.

As Perfetti stated unabashedly after his exit interview, the Jets forward wants to be part of the long-term solution and there should be an opportunity for the player and the team to find common ground on a long-term deal with the Jets before an arbitration hearing takes place.
