Spiring named chairwoman of Bombers’ board

It wasn’t a blockbuster player signing but the Winnipeg Football Club made significant news of a different sort Wednesday, announcing Dayna Spiring had been appointed chairwoman of its board of directors.

Spiring, the president and CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg, becomes the first female in WFC history to be named board chair of the Blue Bombers. The move was effective Jan. 1.

Spiring held the position of vice-chairwoman since January of 2016 and previously served as corporate secretary.

In February of 2017, Spiring was named the club’s alternate governor and became the first female representative to sit on the league’s board since former Ottawa Rough Riders general manager Jo-Anne Polak in 1989-91.

Jeff Martin, meanwhile, becomes past chairman.

Bill Baines (treasurer), Chris Lorenc (corporate secretary), Kenny Boyce, Craig Evans, Barb Gamey, Priti Shah, Kevin Neiles, Mike Pyle, Scott Sissons and Marnie Strath all remain members of the WFC board.

Spiring was not immediately available for comment.

Veteran linebacker/defensive back Anthony Gaitor has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Bombers that will take him through to the end of the 2020 CFL season.

The 30-year-old Miami product recorded 27 defensive tackles, two interceptions, two sacks and scored a pair of touchdowns in 10 games for the Blue Bombers in 2018, his first in Winnipeg and third in the league.

The 5-10, 182-pounder began his CFL career with the B.C. Lions in 2016.
