If you think oatmeal comes in a packet, think again.

They know about oatmeal in Ireland and Scotland, where whole-grain, steel-cut oats are popular. Yes, these slightly chewy oats take longer to cook than old-fashioned rolled oats (and way longer than instant oats in a packet), but the results are so much better.

To shorten the usual half-hour cooking time, start the process at night and then finish up in the morning. Follow this recipe with your kids.

OVERNIGHT OATMEAL WITH RAISINS AND BROWN SUGAR

Servings: 4

Prep Time: 10 minutes, plus overnight resting time

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Prepare Ingredients:

3 cups plus 1 cup water, measured separately

1 cup steel-cut oats

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup raisins

3 tablespoons packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Gather Cooking Equipment:

Large saucepan with lid

Wooden spoon or rubber spatula

Start Cooking!

In large saucepan, bring 3 cups water to boil over high heat. Turn off heat and slide saucepan to cool burner. Stir in oats and salt. Cover saucepan with lid and let sit overnight.

In morning, stir remaining 1 cup water into saucepan with oats and bring to boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture is creamy and oats are tender but chewy, 4 to 6 minutes.

Turn off heat and slide saucepan to cool burner. Stir in raisins, sugar, butter, and cinnamon. Cover and let sit for 5 minutes. Serve.

Make It Your Way

If you don’t like raisins and cinnamon, try these fun flavour combinations.

— Banana and Brown Sugar Oatmeal: Use 2 chopped ripe bananas instead of raisins. Leave out cinnamon.

— Blueberry and Almond Oatmeal: Use 1/2 cup blueberries instead of raisins. Use 2 tablespoons almond butter instead of butter and cinnamon. Add 1/2 cup sliced almonds to oatmeal along with blueberries.

— Toasted Coconut Oatmeal: Use 1 cup canned coconut milk instead of water. Use 1/2 cup toasted unsweetened flaked coconut instead of raisins. Leave out butter and cinnamon.

Free Press readers of a certain vintage may remember when tuning into a local radio station to hear a pair of disc jockeys perusing a section of the Saturday edition was appointment listening.

On Sunday mornings from 1962 until the mid-1980s, CKRC 630 personalities Bob Washington and Tom Ashmore — better known as Wash and Ash — entertained Winnipeggers of all ages by impersonating the likes of Dennis the Menace, Beetle Bailey and Archie Andrews, as they lent their voices to that weekend’s multi-page, colour comic insert.

In a 1984 interview, Washington, who died in 2016 at the age of 82, attributed the weekly program’s longevity to audiences enjoying the antics of “two middle-aged guys in 24 dialects, giving their version of what Dagwood is saying to Blondie, or what Hägar the Horrible is bragging about.”

More than 40 years later, another Winnipegger is turning to the Free Press for her material. Only instead of reading the paper’s funnies, Lori Klassen, a mother of three and grandmother of two, is funnily reading the paper.

Sultans one win away from MJBL three-peat

A small delay due to lightning didn’t slow down the Carillon Sultans as they stormed into Koskie Field and defeated the Elmwood Giants 12-0 Sunday to take a 2-0 series lead in the Manitoba Junior Baseball League final.

Across the first two games of the best-of-five series, Carillon has a 27-5 run advantage after a similar offensive output during Game 1 in Steinbach on Friday. The Giants and Sultans have played in the finals the past three seasons, with Carillon winning both previous years.

The Sultans offence was quick to strike, plating eight runs in the top of the second inning. Anders Meilleur cleared the bases with a three-run double to start the barrage, with Dayton Christensen crushing a three-run home run to left-centre to cap off the inning.

“If we get on a roll in an inning, it’s contagious,” head coach Don Meilleur said. “We don’t hurt teams by getting one or two runs an inning, we hurt teams because we put up a crooked number most of the time and today was the perfect example… Anybody on that bench and anybody in the lineup can hurt another team. We just always find ways to get somebody to be a hero.”

Starstruck kids and fans zigzagged throughout the rink, anxiously waiting to get an autograph from Kati Tabin and to see their role model on the same side of the glass.

Tabin, Montreal Victoire defender and Team Canada silver medallist, on Saturday came home to the rink where it all began, the Oakbank Community Club. She brought the PWHL championship trophy, the Walter Cup, won in her third season with the club, as well as her 2026 Milan Cortina Olympic medal.

The arena was packed to the brim with fans from all over coming to see Tabin — the local player who made history in women’s hockey. Hundreds of enthusiasts of all ages lined up with their Victoire or Team Canada merchandise, some waiting over two hours to see their idol.

Eight-year-old Loxley Cierzan came with her mother, Ainsley, and other family members to meet the one and only Tabin. Cierzan has loved seeing other girls grace the ice and play the competitive sport she adores. When the PWHL takeover stopped in Winnipeg in March, she not only got to watch the game but also a practice beforehand where Tabin signed her Victoire hat.
