University of Winnipeg guard Narcisse Ambanza earned his third consecutive Canada West conference men’s basketball all-star selection while Manitoba guard Rashawn Browne was named to the third team all-star squad Thursday.
Ambanza earned second-team all-conference honours in voting done by the conference’s 17 men’s basketball head coaches.
In 2018-19, the 6-2 Ambanza scored a career-high 18.8 points per game to lead the Wesmen while dishing out a career-high 6.2 assists per game, which ranked second in Canada West. In addition, Ambanza was second on the team in rebounds per game with 6.1.
Ambanza also registered five double-doubles, which was second on the Wesmen, and topped the 30-point mark twice, including a career-high-tying 36-point effort in a Feb. 7 playoff win over Manitoba.
Ambanza also set a single-game career-high in a Jan. 31 win over Manitoba when he was credited with 16 assists.
“Narcisse had a tremendous season and was impactful at both ends of the floor for us,” Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault said in a statement. “We asked a lot of him every night and he did a great job of leading our group.”
Ambanza was named a third-team all-star last season and cracked the conference all-rookie team in 2016-17.
Meanwhile, the all-star selection was a first for Browne in his career at the University of Manitoba. It was also the fourth consecutive season that a Manitoba men’s basketball player has been named a conference all-star (Justus Alleyn, first team in 2017-18, second team in 2016-17; Keith Omoerah, second team in 2015-16.
Browne, 23, averaged 16 points per game, an improvement of 3.2 points over his 2017-18 season, which was good for 19th in the conference. The Toronto native also averaged 5.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game.
The conference’s major award winners will be revealed Feb. 28.
