Valour add players to roster

Valour FC bolstered their midfield on Tuesday with the signings of Nicolas Galvis and Nestor Navia to multi-year contracts.

The 21-year-old midfielders spent the 2018 season in Columbia. Galvis suited up for Deportivo Pereira (Categoria Primera B) while Navia played for Deportivo Pasto (Categoria Primera A).

Galvis was born in Bogota, but moved to St. Catharines, Ont., with his family when he was seven. In 2016, Galvis joined second-division team Canadian SC (Uruguay) before joining Deportivo Pereira in 2017. That same year, Galvis earned his first call-up to Canada’s senior team prior to their friendly against Curaçao and was named to the provisional roster for the 2017 Gold Cup.

“Nicolas is a very talented young Canadian whose soccer experience and talent has been developed in Colombia,” Rob Gale, head coach and general manager of the Winnipeg-based Valour FC, said in a statement. “I think he will be a great asset and a player the fans will really enjoy watching play.”

Navia, from Santander de Quilichao, Columbia, started out in the youth program with Deportivo Pasto before climbing up to the first team in 2017.

“Navia is another young player who has honed his craft in South America and is a great mix of all the skill sets needed to be a modern midfield player,” Gale said. “He comes to Valour excited and hungry to showcase his abilities and therefore is a great fit for us in terms of his character, personality and football ability.”

Valour FC has 15 players under contract for the Canadian Premier League’s inaugural season.
