Valour FC announced Wednesday defender Jordan Murrell will be the team’s first captain.

Murrell, a 25-year-old from Markham, Ont., spent last season with Reno 1868 FC of the United Soccer League. He was drafted 57th overall in the 2015 MLS Superdraft by Real Salt Lake.

Skylar Thomas will be the team’s co-captain. Thomas was the first player to sign a contract with the team, and spent last season playing for the USL’s Charleston Battery. The 25-year-old defender from Scarborough, Ont., was drafted in the 2015 MLS superdraft, going 11th overall to Toronto FC.

Murrell and Thomas were teammates in college at Syracuse University from 2011-14.

Valour FC will open the inaugural Canadian Premier League season on the road in Victoria on May 1 against Pacific FC.
