NEW YORK – A free e-book collection allows fans of Tracy Chevalier, JoJo Moyes and more than 40 other writers to read early excerpts of their upcoming books.

“Buzz Books 2019: Fall/Winter,” published Tuesday, features such works as Chevalier’s “A Single Thread” and Moyes’ “The Giver of Stars.” Other excerpted books include memoirs by Adrienne Brodeur and by former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power, and Stephen Chboksy’s novel “Imaginary Friend,” his follow-up to “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” The compilation also includes 12 debut novels, among them Kiley Reid’s “Such a Fun Age.”

“Buzz Books 2019” was released by Publishers Marketplace (buzz.publishersmarketplace.com), the online industry newsletter. A companion “Buzz Books” volume will feature young adult titles for the fall and winter.

Police investigators probing an attack on a Winnipeg mosque have determined the weapon used was likely an airsoft or pellet-style gun — not a firearm, as initially believed.

The Winnipeg Police Service said in an update Friday investigators have potentially linked the Wednesday night shooting at Rahma Islamic Centre to reports of similar damage at a home on the 600 block of Roberta Avenue.

“The incident is reported to have occurred at 10:15 p.m. on the same evening, and damage to the windows of the residence is believed to have been caused by an airsoft or pellet-style gun as well,” the news release said.

“Due to the proximity and time frame of both incidents, investigators are attempting to determine if the incidents are related.”

Woman, 58, fatally stabbed on Portage Avenue

City police have a suspect in custody after a daytime stabbing in downtown Winnipeg on Tuesday resulted in the death of a 58-year-old woman.

Officers responded to the 300 block of Portage Avenue after receiving a report about the incident around 2:45 p.m. Arriving officers found Helen Annie Spence suffering from severe and life-threatening injuries, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

Spence, a member of Grand Rapids First Nation who had been living in Winnipeg, was transported to the hospital in critical condition where she died of her injuries, the release said.

The suspect fled before officer arrived, but was later identified by investigators from the homicide unit, police said.
