Red River Co-op will open its seventh food store in Manitoba next week when it launches an outlet in Gimli.
Red River Co-op, which sells food and fuel, plus home and agricultural services, said it will take over Super A Foods at 55 Centre St., across from the post office, as of July 8.
“For us, there was an opportunity to enter the market, and an opportunity with our gas bar to our extend services in Gimli,” Paul Bustard, Red River Co-op’s vice-president of food operations, said Wednesday. The gas bar is located at 83 Centre St.
Red River Co-op CEO Doug Wiebe said in a statement that due to strong market performance and a solid financial base, it “is the perfect time to expand our food business.”
Kevin and Cheryl St. Martin owned Super A Foods for 21 years. Bustard said the co-op came to an agreement with the St. Martins about a month ago, as the couple prepared to retire.
Bustard said all Super A Foods employees were offered jobs with Red River Co-op and all accepted.
Bustard said the food store allows people in Gimli to become Red River Co-op members and enjoy membership benefits, such as profit sharing. In 2018, Red River Co-op members shared in $41.1 million of profits.
