Orr birdies way to lead

A clear front-runner emerged from the crowd on Day 2of the senior women’s golf championships at Rossmere Golf & Country Club.

Five-time champion Rhonda Orr put up yet another impressive showing and sunk two birdies in Tuesday’s round, bringing her tournament birdie total up to five. At the end of Day 2, Orr led the way with at 9-over 155. She holds a 10-stroke lead over Tammy Gibson in second place.

Last year’s championships proved to be an even tighter race between Gibson and Orr. In the end, Orr edged Gibson by two shots to capture her fifth provincial title in six years. While Orr is happy with the way she’s been playing, she doesn’t plan on thinking about the prospect another potential championship win.

“Maybe you feel a little bit of extra pressure, but every day is a new day on the golf course and that’s the way you have to look at it. Yesterday’s champion is not necessarily tomorrow’s,” she said.

On the men’s side of the senior championships, there was a lot more of shuffling around on the leaderboard.

St. Boniface Golf Course member Mike Walker shot a two-over 72 on Tuesday, putting him in sole possession of first place.

Last year’s champion, Bruce North of Carman Golf & Country Club, dropped into second after shooting a seven-over 77.

He’s in a four-way tie with Carl Lechman, Garth Collings and Tom Huminski, all sitting at 150 over two days of play.

The third and final day of play in the senior championships gets underway today, with the first round of golfers teeing off at Rossmere at 9 a.m.
