Canada’s offence comes alive in 10-0 win over Italy at LLWS

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Canada bounced back with a strong performance on Saturday, waiting out an early rain delay to beat Italy 10-0 at the Little League World Series.

The game was scoreless when it was halted for over an hour in the top of the second inning because of weather. When play resumed, the Canadians were ready — exploding with a five-run second that began with Tai Freeman scoring from third on a wild pitch.

Canada put up another five runs in the fourth inning, leading to the mercy rule.

Matt Shanley went 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Nolan Loverin tacked on a two-run single in the fourth for Canada.

Canada’s Brady Dorwart showed his patience at the plate by getting walked three times and scoring twice.

Piero Leon-Carney pitched 3 2/3 innings for Canada, allowing jut three hits with two strikeouts, and also made the defensive play of the game when he slid towards the third base line to catch a pop-up.

The Italians didn’t do themselves any favours by committing three errors.

The Canadians are 1-1 after opening the tournament with a 5-0 loss against Mexico. Meanwhile, the Europe-Africa Region representatives from Bologna, Italy are 0-2 after falling 20-0 against Japan a day earlier.

The 12-year-old all-stars from Coquitlam, B.C., upset Quebec in the Canadian championship final to earn their way to Williamsport, Pa.

No Canadian team has ever won the Little League World Series despite appearing in every tournament since 1952.
