WAG rooftop pop-ups winding down

There’s no denying it: the days are getting shorter and the forecast is getting cooler. What better way to soak up the last few days of summer than watching the sun set atop the Winnipeg Art Gallery? The gallery is wrapping up its rooftop pop-up series with two more this year. Stop by on Aug. 29 for a cocktail and Indian fusion sampler party with food by chef Girvir Singh from Charisma of India and a guided tour of selected work from the Vision Exchange: Perspectives from India to Canada exhibit. Tickets are $25 each and include a small plate and a hand-mixed drink. Bring your yoga mat on Sept. 5 for a GLOFLO class led by Yoga Public instructor Lorna Parashin. Participants will be given environmentally friendly fluorescent bands and live music will be provided by Ali Khan. Tickets are $20 or $15 for members and all skill levels are welcome.

Theatre expanding its parameters

Cinematheque’s monthly Restoration Tuesday program, highlighting digitally restored versions of classic films, expands its parameters in September. Expansion is the only option to accomodate the seven-hour production of War and Peace, an epic directed by Sergei Bondarchuk. Released in 1966, the adaptation of Tolstoy’s novel set out to prove the Soviet film industry could match anything produced by Hollywood, and the critical consensus was that it succeeded. The film screens in four parts, the first two on one Tuesday, the next two on the following Tuesday. But for the iron-butted cinephile, all four parts will screen back-to-back on Sunday, Sept. 29, beginning at noon.

Star Wars trailer keeps the mystery alive

Although Disney’s handling of the Star Wars franchise is a divisive topic among film fans and pop-culture aficionados, the megacorp continues to turn out new movies, spinoffs, theme park additions and video games. After a shaky start to the new Star Wars theme park (the company had set up a registration system in expectation of massive crowds that didn’t materialize), Disney released a new trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In typical J. J. Abrams style, the director’s mystery-box style of previews teases both casual moviegoers and die-hard fans who will spend the next four months dissecting the trailer.
