NEW YORK – The Yankees got quite a two-for-one deal to kick off Labor Day weekend.
New York manager Aaron Boone’s replay challenge led umpires to overturn both ends of a double play in the fourth inning against the Oakland Athletics on Friday night, helping the Yankees take a 2-1 lead.
Austin Romine hit into what was initially ruled a 6-4-3 double play, which would have left New York with two outs and a runner on third.
Replays showed second baseman Jurickson Profar lifted his foot off the bag early while taking the feed from shortstop Marcus Semien. Profar was moving quickly to avoid hard-charging Brett Gardner, who made a hard, clean slide that caused Profar to tumble over.
Profar’s throw resulted in a bang-bang play at first, and replay judges overruled the call by first base ump Sean Barber.
Mike Tauchman hit into a double play the next at-bat — no drama on this one — that scored Luke Voit from third.
Profar homered in the second inning.
