ZURICH – FIFA will stream African qualifying games for the 2022 World Cup live and free on its website and YouTube channel.

FIFA says the new global broadcasts start Wednesday in first-round games involving 28 African teams in the next week.

This was made possible after 54 African national soccer federations agreed to hand over central control of their broadcast rights to Zurich.

Consent was obtained amid recent turmoil in the Confederation of African Football leadership that saw FIFA send its secretary general, Fatma Samoura, to Cairo to run the governing body for an initial six months.

FIFA says the broadcasting “landmark initiative” will give “fans in Africa and around the world unprecedented access to the African qualifiers.”

The 14 winners of the two-leg series will advance to a 40-team group stage.

The 10 group winners play a knockout round to decide Africa’s five teams at the 2022 finals tournament in Qatar.
