App helps shoppers cut food waste
A Canadian smartphone app is giving Manitoba grocery shoppers the chance to help the environment while saving some serious dough — no coupons required. The Flashfood app lets users purchase foods approaching their best-before date at a discount of up to 50 per cent and then pick up their groceries in-store. Earlier this summer, the company partnered with Loblaws, making the Flashfood service available at eight Real Canadian Superstore locations in Winnipeg and Brandon. The app is free to download and available for Android and iOS devices.

Joey X DoorDash
Joey Restaurants is celebrating its addition to food-delivery app DoorDash by offering major discounts this week (so you still have today and Friday) for the first 2,000 people nationally to order through DoorDash each day starting at 3 p.m. On Monday, the restaurant gave a promo code for $50 off your order, with that amount decreasing by $10 each day. Today’s promo code will be for $20 off and Friday’s for $10 off. Visit joeyrestaurants.com/door-dash to get the daily code.

Begonia drops album trailer
Fear, the full-length debut from Winnipeg soul-pop queen Begonia, is easily among the most anticipated Canadian releases of the year — and she’s generating even more excitement via a gorgeous album trailer, available now on YouTube.
In the 7½-minute video, directed by Gwen Trutnau, the resplendent songstress invades a roller rink with a crew of dancers and drag queens. Also keep an eye out for music writer Erin Lebar’s feature-length profile in Saturday’s Free Press. Fear is out Sept. 13.
