In its third year, the Winnipeg Theatre Awards — a.k.a. the Evies, in honour of the late and legendary Winnipeg actor Evelyne Anderson — were handed out Monday night at the West End Cultural Centre to 10 recipients who represented a cross-section of theatre professionals in the city and beyond.
Of the 10 juried categories, a couple of Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre productions won three awards apiece, a Prairie Theatre Exchange show picked up two, and two smaller companies picked up two others. Five previously announced awards were handed out to Brian Perchaluk (Career Contribution Award), Melinda Tallin (Behind The Scenes Award), Charles Huband (Theatre Champion Award), Kayla Gordon (Theatre Educator Award) and Doreen Brownstone (the inaugural Chair’s Commendation Award).
And the winners were:
Outstanding Lead Actor: Daniel MacIvor, New Magic Valley Fun Town, Prairie Theatre Exchange.
Outstanding Lead Actress: Mariam Bernstein, Becoming Dr. Ruth, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre.
Outstanding Supporting Actor: Ben Elliott, Matilda the Musical, Royal MTC John Hirsch Mainstage.
Outstanding Supporting Actress: Maggie Nagle, John, Royal MTC Tom Hendry Warehouse.
Outstanding Ensemble: Matilda the Musical, Royal MTC John Hirsch Mainstage.
Outstanding Production: John, Royal MTC Tom Hendry Warehouse.
Outstanding New Work: New Magic Valley Fun Town, Prairie Theatre Exchange.
Outstanding Direction: Christopher Brauer, John, Royal MTC Tom Hendry Warehouse.
Reg Skene Award for Emerging Director: Gislina Patterson.
Outstanding Choreography or Fight Direction: Kimberley Rampersad and Jacqueline Loewen, Matilda the Musical, Royal MTC John Hirsch Mainstage.
Outstanding Design: Red Earth, One Trunk Theatre. Daina Leitold (set, costumes and props); Itai Erdal (lighting); jaymez (sound); Matthew Waddell (projection); Laura Anzola (animation); GMB Chomichuk (illustration).
