Smith, New Brunswick make history in loss at Canadian Curling Junior Championships

LANGLEY, B.C. – In a historic first for any Canadian championship, Carly Smith — third for New Brunswick — is an amputee competing among other able-bodied curlers at the 2020 Canadian Junior Championships in Langley, British Columbia.

Smith, who slides without a broom, shot 90% in her Draw 1 match against Nova Scotia on Saturday.

Her New Brunswick team, led by skip Melodie Forsythe, lost their opener 9-7 to Nova Scotia.

In other women’s matches during the tournament’s first day — Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Ontario all won their first two games to remain a perfect 2-0.

Host British Columbia split their first two matches by first defeating Yukon 16-2, before falling in Draw 3 to Saskatchewan 8-5.

On the men’s side, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador were the only teams to improve their record to 2-0.

Saskatcheman, Manitoba #2 and Northern Ontario still remain unbeaten after all three won their only match of the day.
