The 30-year-old Thunder Bay-native is best known for his breakout single, 2 Heads, which has surpassed 120 million streams on Spotify and went four-times platinum in Canada and gold in the U.S., as well as the follow-up single, Fireproof, which went double-platinum in Canada.

His debut album, 2016’s Summerland, earned him nominations for Juno Awards, MMVAs and a SOCAN songwriting award. New music from Hell is expected later this year.

Winnipeg alt-rock band the Treble will open the night. Tickets are $30 in advance at Eventbrite.com and the music starts at 8 p.m. For more information about the rest of Winterruption, including scheduling and ticket purchasing, visit Wecc.ca.

Monster Jam Triple Threat Series

A Winnipeg winter just isn’t complete without the sight of oversized trucks careening over hills and spinning seemingly out of control — and that’s just on the daily commute.

If you want to see how the pros tackle donuts, wheelies, high speeds and plenty of four-wheeled tricks, BellMTS Place is the place to be this weekend as the Monster Jam Triple Threat Series stops in the city for a trio of high-octane, adrenaline-filled motorsports events that are sure to impress both young and old alike.

In addition to monster trucks and their high-decibel engine revving and oversized tires, the Triple Threat Series — whose Winnipeg stop takes place on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m., as well as at 7 p.m. Saturday night — sees ATVs and speedsters (think modified dune buggies) square off at ice level as they take part in a number of different events in an effort to tally up points.

Drivers with the most points at the end of the events have a chance to punch their ticket to the Monster Jam World Finals, which take place May 2-3 in Orlando, Fla.

Tickets for the Monster Jam Triple Threat Series start at $13.50 plus fees and are available via ticketmaster.ca — VIP/meet-and-greet packages are available. And yes, they sell you the whole seat, but you may only need the edge.

Izzi Fust is in a better place.

Don’t get it twisted; this isn’t an obituary, far from it. The standout third-year forward feels as lively on a basketball court as she has in years.

After spending the first two years of her university career with the Regina Cougars, Fust returned home this summer and is gearing up for her first season with the Manitoba Bisons.

Her homecoming came one year after older sister Kyu made the jump from Regina to Manitoba.

Military officials were unable to say Monday whether any soldiers from Canadian Forces Base Shilo were among the four dead and 39 injured Saturday when a fast-moving grass fire engulfed a training area at a base in Alberta.

A spokesperson for the Department of National Defence in Ottawa told the Free Press Monday they did not know yet if anyone from Shilo was participating in the exercises at CFB Wainwright, about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, when the fire tore through the area.

The Shilo Military Family Resource Centre, located about 30 kilometres Southeast of Brandon, was offering counselling and other assistance to families of soldiers stationed there.

“We understand that this tragedy may also be deeply felt by members and families here at CFB Shilo,” the MFRC said in a statement posted to Facebook. “Across the Canadian Armed Forces, our communities are connected through shared experiences, friendships, service and sacrifice.”

Yager ready to fly with the Jets

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Yesterday at 6:06 PM CDT

Brayden Yager understood the assignment.

By recording five goals and nine points in six American Hockey League games with the Manitoba Moose to open the season, it was clear Yager brushed aside any lingering disappointment of being the last cut by the Winnipeg Jets following a strong training camp.

Yager, who set up the tying goal and scored the game-winner for the Moose on Sunday against the Texas Stars, was officially recalled by the Jets on Monday morning.

The 14th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft was essentially the extra forward during line rushes, but did see some action with the penalty kill and the second power-play unit with the NHL club on Monday, so it’s still unclear whether or not Yager will be in the lineup against the St. Louis Blues.
