Supporting Urban Stable

Urban Stable hosted its annual Bud and Spud fundraiser at the Canad Inns Destination Centre Polo Park on March 13. All funds raised at the event will benefit youth programming at Urban Stable, a local charity that provides equine experiential learning and horsemanship programs to Winnipeg youth in grades five to 12. Urban Stable aims to facilitate social and emotional well-being and encourage students to develop friendships, engage with their education, their peers and themselves. The Logan Boulet Effect

The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Manitoba Branch, promoted organ donation awareness by paying tribute to Logan Boulet at the Winnipeg Ice game WHL game against the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Wayne Fleming Arena. Boulet, a 21-year-old Humboldt Broncos hockey, player died following a bus crash that took the lives of 16 people on April 6, 2018. Logan’s parents honoured his wish to be an organ donor, saving the lives of six Canadians. At the March 7 event, the Kidney Foundation raised more than $5,000 to support those affected by kidney disease in our province through the sale of “Logan Boulet Effect, Organ Donation” bracelets and auctioning off game-worn Ice jerseys. Manitobans face the highest rate of kidney disease and the longest wait times in Canada for kidney transplants. For more information, visit kidney.ca. March is Kidney Health Month.

Rainbow Stage cancels Sunday performance

1 minute read Yesterday at 9:38 PM CDT

Rainbow Stage’s closing performance of Jesus Christ Superstar on Sunday has been cancelled.

The outdoor musical theatre announced on social media Saturday night that it was forced to make the “difficult but necessary decision” to cancel the 2 p.m. show due to high humidex values forecast for Winnipeg.

“We do not believe it is safe or responsible to proceed with an outdoor performance,” the post said.

Rainbow Stage said those with tickets could transfer them to a performance of Legally Blond: The Musical, playing Aug. 13 to 30, donate the value of the tickets to the company and receive a tax credit, or receive a full refund.

‘Very quiet around here’: Duck Mountain biz owners plead for assistance after flooding washes out park

Business owners at Duck Mountain Provincial Park who have lost thousands in revenue say they’re feeling left out of flood-recovery assistance in the Parkland region.

Dawn Dowsett, owner of Blue Lake Resort, said life has been chaotic since the park closed on June 30 due to road washouts.

While there is limited access to the park, with some seasonal campers and cabin owners returning, it’s listed as closed on the Government of Manitoba’s website, with no nightly camping available until July 23.

She says the resort, which includes a restaurant and store, is missing out on part of the summer, a peak time for the business.

Banned drunk driver in crash charged with getting behind wheel again

Erik Pindera 3 minute read Yesterday at 2:02 AM CDT

A Winnipeg man who served time for drunkenly slamming a minivan into an off-duty police officer riding a motorcycle in 2023 is accused of getting behind the wheel, despite court orders.

Braedon Lee Gordon, 25, is charged with one count of driving while prohibited for an incident on March 2. His next court date is later this month.

Dan Léveillé, a veteran Winnipeg Police Service constable who was left with life-altering injuries in the June 14, 2023, collision, said he was not surprised to learn of the new charge.

“This is just another one of those stories, where a habitual, repeat offender is charged for the same offence. After having served time, his behaviour continues,” said Léveillé.

The stage appears to be set for Viggo Björck to make an immediate impact with the Winnipeg Jets.

A significant development occurred this weekend when Djurgården — the Swedish team Björck was under contract for the coming season — announced the 18-year-old was departing the organization under very positive terms.

“Viggo Björck has chosen to leave Djurgården to continue his career in the Winnipeg Jets organization next season,” the news release stated.

The announcement prompted vastly different reactions depending on your perspective.
