ANOTHER Winnipeg restaurant — this time a high-profile Osborne Village eatery — is closing permanently. It had been closed during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.

Segovia, known for its Spanish-influenced small plates, announced on its Instagram account Wednesday it is going out of business.

“We are terribly sad to let you know that we have made the difficult decision to close the big wooden doors at Segovia permanently,” the statement read. “We will miss this little restaurant and cherish the memories that were made here.

“We are sad that we didn’t get to have a really good closing up party and that we served our last service without knowing that it was our last.”

Segovia, located at 484 Stradbrook Ave, opened in 2009 when owner/chef Adam Donnelly was just 26 years old.

In 2018, it was named No. 46 on Canada’s Best 100 Restaurants list. Judges lauded the menu’s mix of traditional and contemporary tapas.

Donnelly couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.

Days ago, Tony Roma’s on Nairn Avenue closed for good, and some in the hospitality industry believe this is only the beginning of a string of permanent restaurant closures owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

In its Instagram post, Segovia paid tribute to its staff, suppliers and guests.

“We are so proud to have been a part of Winnipeg’s inspiring culinary scene for over a decade. Thank you for having us. All the best to each and every one of you that have graced our tables,” the statement read. “May your plates and cups always be full of the good stuff.”

This year has been a tragic one for Manitoba’s motorcycle community.

The latest fatality involves a 56-year-old Steinbach woman who crashed in Whiteshell Provincial Park on Sunday, the sixth motorcycle-related death of 2026.

The woman died in hospital after she lost control while heading eastbound on Highway 44 near Provincial Road 312. RCMP said Tuesday she flipped the bike into the south ditch at about 5:30 p.m. Her identity has not been released.

RCMP said the investigation is ongoing, but preliminary findings indicate debris or gravel on a curve in the road may have been a factor.

Natassia Brazeau says she doesn’t feel unsafe living and working in Winnipeg’s Exchange District — instead, she feels heartbreak.

She said that feeling intensified last week during the Winnipeg Police Service’s controversial 10-day crackdown on open drug use and drug trafficking which pushed people away from the Main Street strip.

Brazeau, who owns a business in the area, said she has never seen so many people head to the Exchange District at once.

“I’m absolutely enraged at the police response last week,” Brazeau said. “Not only was that incredibly short-sighted and doesn’t do anything, it doesn’t assist anyone that are already in incredibly vulnerable situations.”

Sea Bears set to go for season sweep against Stingers

Joshua Frey-Sam 7 minute read Yesterday at 5:46 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Sea Bears have found a lot of ways to win this summer, and yet, something about Sunday still felt different.

A nail-biting 100-98 victory over the Edmonton Stingers wasn’t the club’s most impressive 40-minute effort of the season, but perhaps it was the most resilient after trailing the entire first half then outlasting the Stingers in Target Score Time to steal one on the road.

Head coach Mike Raimbault has harped on the importance of his team staying in the moment, especially when times get tough. When the Sea Bears have lacked in that area — which has always come away from home — they’ve paid the price in the form of some crushing losses.

But Sunday was different. There was no panic, even when the Stingers’ lead stretched into double digits, and Winnipeg was rewarded for it.

Mike O’Shea is more likely to cough up his credit card information than share anything about an injured player.

That especially rings true when it comes to the quarterback position — and Zach Collaros.

The starting pivot for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-2) left Sunday’s 14-13 win in Hamilton on the first play of the second quarter after being strip-sacked from the blind side.

Collaros is on the injury report with a neck issue and is listed as questionable for Friday’s date with the visiting Toronto Argonauts (2-2).
