Search continues for brothers feared drowned at Nutimik Lake

Search-and-rescue crews continued efforts Monday to locate two boys who are presumed drowned after falling into fast-moving rapids at Nutimik Lake on the weekend, as community members and Manitoba Parks begin conversations about preventing future tragedies.

The boys, identified as brothers Aaron Au Ramirez, 13, and Maximo Au Ramirez, 10, were visiting Whiteshell Provincial Park with their father and some friends when they entered the water near the Sturgeon Falls Trail Saturday afternoon.

Lac du Bonnet RCMP received a report of a possible drowning at about 12:40 p.m. Police, along with local emergency responders, searched the shoreline and waterways but were unable to find the boys, RCMP said in a news release.

The Manitoba RCMP Underwater Recovery Team and the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team were later deployed to assist with the search.

Killer makes ‘amends with his maker

A Winnipeg man, who once faced two counts of first-degree murder for slayings that were three days apart, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for manslaughter.

Rory Shane Nash, 42, entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge in the Feb. 1, 2023 killing of Lee James Boulette.

Nash was also one of four people arrested in the killing of Carl George Wescoupe three days earlier at the Manwin Hotel on Main Street. Prosecutors later stayed the first-degree murder charge against Nash due to insufficient evidence.

Nash co-operated with prosecutors in both cases, but ultimately did not testify in court, Crown attorney Brent Davidson told provincial court Judge Margaret Wiebe at a sentencing hearing Tuesday.

Plan being developed to tackle drug use, homelessness near church

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham says a plan is in the works to address growing concerns over drug use and homelessness around an Osborne Village church after complaints from a nearby daycare, residents and businesses.

Gillingham said his senior adviser on homelessness, Jarred Baker, met with people in the area on Friday and was expected to provide a report later Monday outlining what was discussed and potential next steps.

Craig Wynands, executive director of 1JustCity, confirmed someone from the city met with Oak Table’s site lead, Thomas van der Krogt. Wynands also said he met Monday with officials from Augustine Centre and SPLASH Child Care.

“We discussed safety measures and increasing staff presence around the premises of the building,” he said. “1JustCity will be hiring additional staff to patrol the property regularly during the day.”

Elmhurst golfer carries four stroke lead into final round of Mid-Am

Evan Nachtigall wouldn’t call it a perfect day of golf, but it was pretty darn close for the Elmhurst member.

The 25-year-old holds the solo lead at 9-under par in the provincial Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship after a 36-hole opening day at Quarry Oaks in Steinbach on Tuesday.

Nachtigall, the reigning Men’s Golfer of the Year, carded a four-under 68 on his opening 18 on the strength of four birdies and an eagle, then did one better on his second time out, firing a bogey-free five-under 67 in gusty conditions.

“It’s been a good day,” said Nachtigall, who won the 2025 Men’s Amateur Championship. “I feel like I really stayed patient out there. Definitely frustrated on the greens, for sure. I felt like I probably had at least 20 good looks at birdie out there today, and I’m just burning edges. But at the end of the day, nine-under through two rounds, I’ll take it.”
