Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 31/07/2020 (2274 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
It’s been five years since the first Terry Fox Day in Manitoba and 40 years since Fox’s Marathon of Hope, a cross-country run to raise money for cancer research that was cut short after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres when the one-legged runner’s own cancer spread.
To honour the Winnipeg-born national icon, Manitoba legislation took effect in 2015 declaring the first Monday of August Terry Fox Day. There are fewer events this long weekend because of the pandemic, but at least one thing is returning to normal, as buses are switching to a regular summer schedule Sunday, with full weekday summer service resuming Tuesday.
The Free Press is not publishing a print edition on Monday but will publish an e-edition that’s free to all subscribers. Readers can also visit winnipegfreepress.com for the latest news and information.
Many businesses and government services change their hours on Terry Fox Day. Here’s a selection:
COVID-19 test sites
The drive-through testing site (the MPI centre at 1284 Main St.), and the sites at Access Fort Garry (135 Plaza Dr.) and the former St. Vital municipal office (604 St. Mary’s Rd.), are all open regular hours — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — the entire long weekend. No appointment or referral is required. The Thunderbird House site (715 Main St.), which is closed on weekends, is also closed Monday.
Shopping
Most shopping malls such as CF Polo Park, Kildonan Place Shopping Centre, St. Vital Centre and Outlet Collection Winnipeg are open 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday, and Grant Park Shopping Centre is open from noon to 5 p.m.
The Forks Market is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart, are open.
Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg operate 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, except for True North Square, which will be closed. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.
Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday. Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries said the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.
Entertainment
The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with select exhibits closed, as well as gift shops and play structures.
The Manitoba Museum, along with the Children’s Museum and the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, is closed.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery’s Rooftop Retreat and sculpture garden is open for the rest of the summer.
Three movie theatres in Winnipeg have reopened since closing because of the pandemic. The Grant Park, Polo Park and St. Vital theatres are operating at a reduced capacity.
Recycling and trash
Recycling and garbage will be collected as regularly scheduled for those with Monday as their collection day.
The Brady Road landfill is open 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, and the Brady 4R depot is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Pacific 4R and Panet 4R depots are closed.
Leisure activities
All leisure centres will be closed Monday.
The Crescent Drive, Harbour View, John Blumberg, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park golf courses will be open from sunrise to sunset.
Weather permitting, City of Winnipeg outdoor swimming pools will be open noon to 7 p.m. while splash pads operate from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and select wading pools are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Outdoor pools will be operating at limited capacity, and swimmers are encouraged to book swim blocks before arriving at the pool. Wading pool admissions are first come, first served.
Federal and provincial parks are open with limited services. Provincial COVID-19 safety and physical-distancing measures are in place.
Winnipeg Transit
Transit will return to a regular summer schedule on Sunday and operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, Terry Fox Day. Buses will return to full weekday summer service on Tuesday.
For route and schedule details, visit Winnipeg Transit or contact 311.
Libraries
