It’s all sweetness and light on “Candy Cane Lane” as the street in Linden Woods has become known after years in which residents have decked out their homes in glittering lights and fancy holiday ornaments.

“It’s fun,” said Norma Desiderio as her husband Ross secured his ladder so he could hang their own twinkling lights.

Fox Meadow Drive, its everyday name, and neighbouring streets, are decorated with colourful lights and displays during the holidays each year.

The Desiderios, who have lived on Lindenwood Drive East for 20 years, said they always look forward to seeing the area decked out in ornaments and cherish visits by people admiring the community.

“Everyone is welcome,” said Desiderio.

The couple said their neighbourhood bustles on weekends and weeknights as people enjoy a safe pastime while adhering to COVID-19 restrictions.

Homeowner Perry Giesbrecht said his family loves this time of year.

“Most of the street participates,” said Giesbrecht, who has lived on Fox Meadow for about six years. “(The streets are) busy, but we love it. The more the merrier.”

Giesbrecht said he’s started to wear a light-up Christmas sweater and wave to people driving by his house.

“It’s something positive to enjoy, especially this year,” said Giesbrecht.

Erin Daly and her husband, David Taylor, moved onto Fox Meadow Drive in October and were surprised by the community’s dedication to the light show.

“We didn’t know the extent of it, but we definitely have big plans for next year,” said Daly who noted that last weekend they had cars lined on their street until 10 p.m.

“It’s good to see. There’s not much else we can do right now that’s safe, and I hope it can bring people’s spirits up at least,” said Daly.

The mother-to-be added she is slightly concerned about the volume of cars because she’s due on Dec. 23.

“My only concern is if I go into labour and I have to go to the hospital,” said Daly who wants to remind visitors to be respectful as they “enjoy the lights.”
