Manitoba will be five strong at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary.

Beth Peterson’s team from Winnipeg is a lock to be awarded the third and final wild-card spot for the Canadian women’s curling championship, set for Feb. 19-28 in bubble format at WinSport Arena.

The crew from Assiniboine Memorial is No. 12 on the Canadian Team Ranking System, the highest-eligible team without a Scotties berth already secured.

Suzanne Birt of Prince Edward Island is ranked ninth but won a third consecutive provincial title Saturday to advance to the nationals. Birt registered a win Friday and pair of victories Saturday over Darlene London to sweep the best-of-five P.E.I. championship series.

Peterson joins Gimli Kerri Einarson, back to defend as Team Canada, Jennifer Jones of St. Vital, representing Manitoba, and two additional wild-card teams, Tracy Fleury of East St. Paul and Altona’s Mackenzie Zacharias, the reigning world junior champion.

Curling Canada is expected to deliver its official invites this week.

The Scotties field has been expanded to 18 teams this year by the federation to include 14 provincial/territorial representatives, the returning champion and three wild-card teams.

Six events over about nine weeks will be staged without fans in the arena at Canada Olympic Park — owing to the COVID-19 pandemic — including the Scotties, Brier national men’s championship, Canadian mixed doubles championship, world men’s championship and a pair of Grand Slam of Curling men’s and women’s bonspiels, which usually feature a stellar international contingent.

In men’s play, 2020 Manitoba champion Jason Gunnlaugson of Morris returns to the Brier, March 5-14, while Mike McEwen of East St. Paul heads west as a wild-card team.
