Rizzo returning to MLB Network as contributor on 'High Heat'

Alanna Rizzo is returning to MLB Network, where she will be a regular contributor on Christopher Russo's “High Heat” show.

Rizzo spent two seasons with MLB Network before going to SportsNet LA, where she spent seven seasons as a reporter and host for the network's coverage of the Los Angeles Dodgers. She announced earlier this year that she was leaving to be closer to family on the East Coast.

“I didn't want to be done and retire. I reached out to some colleagues and friends at MLB Network after I made my decision to let them know that I was available,” she said.

Rizzo will provide news and commentary during “High Heat”, which airs weekdays in the early afternoon. She said the biggest challenge of the new job will be getting up to speed on teams outside of the NL West.

Manitoba family finalist for cattle producers environmental award

A family in western Manitoba is one of seven finalists for a national environmental award honouring beef cattle producers.

Connor and Kyla English, alongside Connor’s parents, Brian and Leanne English, are nominated for the Canadian Cattle Association’s Environmental Stewardship Award. The 30-year-old award is presented to beef farmers and ranchers who explore innovative ways to protect, preserve and enhance their operations and the environment simultaneously.

This year’s recipient will be announced on Wednesday during a banquet at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Winnipeg.

The English family’s roots near Bradwardine — about 265 kilometres west of Winnipeg — date back to 1898. Today, Connor, Kyla, Brian and Leanne manage a herd of about 320 breeding cows on nearly 445 hectares (1,100 acres) of owned and rented pasture and forage land.

It’s an interesting quirk of timing, perhaps, that the end of two of Winnipeg’s most unlovely features are coming into view in the same few weeks. The rail lines that split the city in half, and the bridge that was built to tie it back together. The original problem, and the solution.

At a news conference on Wednesday, former federal transport minister Lloyd Axworthy laid out a vision for a rail line bypass that would remove more than 120 railway crossings from Winnipeg, route them through Crown and Manitoba Hydro corridor land south of the city, and reclaim 250 acres in the urban core for greenspace and development.

The next step is to focus on how to make it happen. Nothing of this scope comes easy. This new bypass plan emerged from a two-year feasibility study that Premier Wab Kinew had tasked Axworthy with back in 2024. Now, Axworthy will helm a new 90-day feasibility study zooming in on that route specifically.
