Stony Mountain inmate dies in custody

An inmate from Stony Mountain Institution serving a sentence for first-degree murder has died.

Correctional Service Canada said Kenneth McDougall died on Saturday at a community hospital of apparent natural causes following an illness.

In January 2010, the Portage la Prairie man was charged with the first-degree murder of his wife, Justina Shteen Unrau McDougall.

Suspect in gang-related shooting in custody

A Montreal man has been arrested for his alleged role in a gang-related shooting behind the old St. Regis Hotel in September 2019.

Saleh Alimasi, 22, was arrested in Montreal on March 28 and returned to Winnipeg on Friday.

He faces several firearms offences and remains in custody.

Police said it is believed that on September 12, 2019, at around 1 a.m., a group encountered a male in the south lane behind the 200 block of Portage Avenue. The male was shot, and a bullet struck the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters — narrowly missing a cadet leaving the building, police said.

Haben Nipsey Weldekidan, who arrived at a nearby hospital suffering from a gunshot wound after the incident, was later charged with firearms offences after he was found to have hidden a firearm near the shooting scene before seeking medical help.

Police added that a second suspect in the shooting was killed in an unrelated homicide and cannot be identified at this time.
