Yastrzemski, Giants win 3-2 over Padres; Tatis injured

SAN DIEGO – Pinch-hitter Mike Yastrzemski launched a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning and Darin Ruf and Evan Longoria also connected to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 victory Monday night against the San Diego Padres, who lost star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. to a partially dislocated left shoulder.

Tatis was injured taking a hard swing for strike three in the third inning. He winced in pain as he fell to the ground and cradled his left arm. Padres manager Jayce Tingler and a trainer held Tatis’ left arm against his body as he walked off the field.

Tatis signed a 14-year, $340 million contract on Feb. 22, the longest deal in big league history.

Tingler said he believes Tatis’ shoulder popped out on the field and was put back in place in the training room.

“It comes out, it comes back in, so he’s been dealing with that,” Tingler said. “Obviously tonight was the first time we’ve seen it in game action from swinging or anything like that.”

The 22-year-old Tatis left a game late in spring training with left shoulder discomfort after making a backhand play but was back two days later. Tingler said then that Tatis had been dealing with left shoulder discomfort since his minor league days. Tatis later said he’d had it since rookie ball.

Earlier in the spring, Tatis was shaken up while sliding headfirst into home and missed several games.

Tatis will be re-evaluated on Tuesday and most likely will have an MRI, Tingler said.

“Of course it’s concerning,” Tingler said. “You don’t want to see him have to play through injury, pain, any of those things, or lack of strength or range of motion. Again, we don’t want to jump the gun on anything; hoping for good news and kind of see where it goes from there.”

Yastrzemski was scratched from the starting lineup with a sore left hand but batted in the pitcher’s spot and homered to centre field off Craig Stammen (0-1) with one out in the seventh, his first.

Ruf homered to centre leading off the second, his first, and Longoria homered to right leading off the fourth, his third. Both were off starter Adrian Morejon.

Caleb Baragar (1-0) got the last out of the sixth and Jake McGee pitched the ninth for his second save. McGee put two runners on with two outs before getting Tommy Pham to fly out to centre field to end it.

Victor Caratini drove in both of San Diego’s runs, on a single in the second and a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Anthony DeSclafani made his Giants debut after spending five seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. He held San Diego to one run and four hits in five innings, struck out four and walked three.

Morejon allowed two runs and five hits in four innings.

Tatis has struggled through the first five games, hitting just .167 and committing five errors, although he hit a 465-foot home run Sunday in a loss to Arizona.

He was limited to 84 games as a rookie in 2019 after missing a month early in the season with a hamstring injury and then the last six weeks with a stress reaction in his lower back.
