BALTIMORE (AP) — Matt Harvey allowed one hit in six scoreless innings in another outstanding performance and the Baltimore Orioles held on to beat the fading Washington Nationals 5-3 on Saturday night.

Harvey (5-10) allowed only one baserunner — Trea Turner hit a double in the fourth. The right-hander struck out four. Harvey went 12 straight starts without a win, but now he’s thrown six scoreless innings in each of his past two starts.

“Feeling really good with all the pitches,” Harvey said. “Especially the curveball. I haven’t thrown that a whole lot in the past — being able to get that over for a strike, and also be able to feel confident with it both to righties and lefties.”

Trey Mancini and Ryan Mountcastle each hit a solo homer, and the Orioles added three more runs in the sixth. Washington, which scratched ace Max Scherzer before the game because of triceps discomfort, has lost 14 of its last 19.

“We’ve still got a lot of baseball left. We really do,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “Offense needs to get it going again.”

Juan Soto hit a solo homer for the Nationals in the seventh, and Turner added a two-run single in the eighth. But Dillon Tate worked a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Jon Lester (3-5) allowed three runs and three hits in five-plus innings after starting in place of Scherzer.

“I felt like I threw the ball pretty well,” Lester said. “Just no results.”

Mancini, who has a seven-game hitting streak since the All-Star break, gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the first when he went deep for the first time since finishing second to Pete Alonso of the Mets in the Home Run Derby. Mountcastle homered in the fourth.

Cedric Mullins doubled to lead off the Baltimore sixth, chasing Lester. Then Austin Hays hit an RBI double off reliever Austin Voth, and Mancini followed with a run-scoring single. Maikel Franco’s sacrifice fly made it 5-0.

Orioles reliever Tanner Scott hit the first two batters he faced in the eighth, loading the bases with nobody out. Then pinch-hitter Victor Robles struck out looking on a full count, and Alcides Escobar struck out as well.

Turner singled to make it 5-3, but Soto followed with a foul popup.

“He made the pitch of the game getting Soto out there. I know that the hit to Trea was disappointing, as well hitting two guys on the foot,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “He got out of the inning, and left that inning with the lead.”

MOVE

The Orioles selected the contract of RHP Conner Greene from Triple-A Norfolk.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Nationals: Martinez said Scherzer is expected to make his next start. … Washington put INF Jordy Mercer on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, with a left calf strain. The Nationals recalled INF Carter Kieboom from Triple-A Rochester. He struck out to end the game.

UP NEXT

John Means (4-3) starts for the Orioles in Sunday’s series finale against Washington’s Paolo Espino (2-2). The Nationals swept a three-game series at home against Baltimore in May, and now the Orioles are trying to return the favor by taking three in a row.

A rural Manitoba MLA says he has heard from constituents who are “shocked and outraged” that a 66-year-old man is facing charges after he fired shots at a group of people accused of stealing from his property.

“This isn’t vigilante justice. This isn’t about someone going out and trying to settle scores,” Josh Guenter, the Progressive Conservative MLA for Borderland, said Thursday.

“This is about Manitobans who have crime perpetrated on them, and what they’re able to do in that moment, to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their property.”

Officers were sent to property in the Rural Municipality of Dufferin, located about 95 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg, on Saturday after a report of a theft in progress. RCMP said four people who had been on the property earlier in the day returned that evening, driving two vehicles stolen from Watrous, Sask.

Marcel Blanchette’s life has not travelled down a smooth road.

In 2014, he was violently assaulted in his home, an unprovoked attack that left him with severe injuries, including permanent brain damage. He underwent months of hospitalization and rehabilitation. During that time, he learned his possessions had been sold off when the Office of The Public Guardian and Trustee took over his affairs.

Twelve years later, he finds himself in another fight. This time, it comes in the form of a proposal from the new owners of the Conway Court apartment block that would nearly double his monthly rent. While he’s been able to live in the Kennedy Street unit with the support of disability income assistance for nearly five years, the sudden spike, he said, could leave him homeless.

“To go through that, and now I’m going through this, it’s another obstacle,” Blanchette told the Free Press. “I fought the Public Guardian and Trustee, and I’ll fight this too, with whatever I have.”

A man who fatally stabbed a Ukrainian newcomer in “a random, unprovoked, and senseless act of violence” on the street has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars.

Ethan Gladu, 22, was found guilty of manslaughter in February in the December 20, 2023 killing of Ivan Rubanik, a 46-year-old father of two who had fled to Canada for a better life with his family several months before.

Gladu, then 19, randomly stabbed Rubanik shortly before 8 a.m., near Talbot Avenue and Watt Street, as the victim was walking to work that morning. He died of blood loss soon after.

“The people of Winnipeg, or any community, should feel confident that they can go about their business, walk to work, support their family, and carry on with their lives without being attacked,” said Court of King’s Bench Justice Kenneth Champagne on Thursday afternoon as he sentenced the killer.

Vance weighs in on Jivani trade advocacy and how Carney tried to ‘out-tough’ Trump

WASHINGTON - U.S. Vice-President JD Vance weighed in on the latest trade deal with Canada at a fundraising event Wednesday, saying Prime Minister Mark Carney tried to "out-tough" President Donald Trump while crediting his longtime friend Conservative MP Jamil Jivani as a helpful advocate for Canada.

In audio from the fundraiser in Southampton, N.Y., which was provided to The Canadian Press by a source who attended the private function, Vance said Carney is a "very sweet guy" and he gets along with him quite well.

But, Vance said, Carney "comes in and puffs his chest out and says, 'I'm going to, like, out-tough Donald Trump.'"

"It's hilarious because Carney presents this as some victory for Canada when fundamentally, like, they climb down on a lot of issues," Vance told the room.
