The Public Utilities Board has approved a rate increase for Centra Gas Manitoba customers, effective Aug. 1.

The typical residential customer will see their rate increase by approximately 8.7 per cent or $58 a year, the board said in a news release. The rates will again be reviewed Nov. 1.

The Aug. 1 increase is due mainly to an increase in gas market prices, said the PUB decision posted online Tuesday.

Futures prices have pushed upwards in the past few months, driven by a variety of supply and demand factors, it said. These include below-average storage levels, underlying strength in gas demand as the North American economy continues its rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, and strong demand for liquefied natural gas exports from North America, PUB said.

The annual Centra Gas bill of a typical residential customer is expected to be roughly $725 in November this year, according to the PUB. In the last 10 years, the highest annual residential bill for a typical customer was an estimated $900 in 2014, and the lowest was just under $550 in 2020.

The Public Utilities Board is an arm’s-length, impartial tribunal and regulator established to act in the public interest.
