Through 18 holes at the RSM Classic, Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes are both in prime position to add to Canada’s PGA Tour win total.
Hughes, who earned his first tour title at the event in 2016, shot a 9-under 63 on Thursday and sat one shot back of leader Sebastián Muñoz.
Conners shot 8 under, but it might have been more impressive. The native of Listowel, Ont. became a new dad just a week ago, moved into a new home days before, and hadn’t played on tour since Oct. 10.
The tournament in Sea Island, Ga. is played on two courses: Seaside (par 70) and Plantation (par 72). Hughes played Plantation in the opening round. Munoz and Conners were on Seaside.
Conners made five birdie putts in a row on the front nine, all less than five feet.
“It felt pretty easy,” said Conners. “I haven’t worked on my game over the past week a whole lot, but I’m never too worried about that. Usually I find things pretty quickly after a break.”
Hughes made four birdies and an eagle on his opening nine, four birdies and a bogey on the second.
The native of Dundas, Ont. hasn’t found the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour since his breakthrough victory at Sea Island, but said Thursday was as good a start as he could ask for – especially since he nipped his good friend by one.
“Feel like I’ve been fairly steady over the last number of months, but that next step is to contend a bit more and get myself in the mix more often,” said Hughes of his 9-under opener. “This is a good start and hopefully keep it going the rest of the week.”
