As Manitoba recorded its highest case count of the fourth wave, and prepared to administer COVID-19 vaccines to younger kids, in-hospital proof of vaccination has expanded.
A fourth-wave spike in COVID-19 transmission means Manitobans who are essential-care partners of hospital patients will have to show proof of vaccination, with some exceptions, starting Monday.
The province announced 201 new cases of the virus Friday and four additional deaths. More than half — 57.7 per cent — of the new cases are among unvaccinated Manitobans.
Spikes in COVID-19 transmission have prompted administration of health-care facilities, including hospitals and health centres, to require proof of vaccination from essential care partners.
Only in end-of life and beginning-of-life circumstances, including parents or guardians of pediatric and neonatal patients, those supporting a woman in labour, delivery or postpartum care, hospital visitors have to be fully vaccinated, Shared Health said Friday. Other exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
The decision was made because of increased transmission of the virus.
“Shared Health and our partners in Manitoba’s health regions recognize the frustration these measures may cause for some patients and families. However, they are an important — and necessary — step in our ongoing efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 and its impact on health services relied upon by all Manitobans,” the statement reads.
Proof of vaccination is already required from people who make social visits to hospital patients. Patients and their families are being notified of the change this weekend.
