Carabins advance to 4th straight U Sports men’s soccer final, will face Ravens

SYDNEY, N.S. – The University of Montreal Carabins will play in a fourth consecutive U Sports men’s soccer championship final after a 1-0 semifinal victory Saturday over the Guelph Gryphons.

U Sports player of the year Guy-Frank Essome Penda produced the game-winner in the 99th minute to send the Carabins back to the national championship game.

Montreal will face the Carleton Ravens for the title Sunday in Ottawa after the Ravens defeated the Cape Breton Capers 3-2 in extra time in Saturday’s second semifinal.

Ricky Comba scored the winner in the 106th minute after the Capers scored two late goals – Cian Lynch in the 88th and Charlie Waters in the 92nd – to force extra time.

Gabriel Bitar scored in the 32nd and Dario Conte converted a first-half stoppage-time penalty for the Ravens.

It’s Carleton’s first men’s soccer final appearance in 19 years.

Guelph meets Cape Breton in the bronze-medal match Sunday.

The Carabins took the title in 2018 when Montreal edged Cape Breton 2-1. Montreal lost the 2017 final 3-2 to Cape Breton and fell 2-0 to the University of Quebec-Trois-Rivieres in the 2019 final.

The 2020 championship tournament was cancelled because of COVID-19.

The MacEwan Griffins and Trinity Western Spartans clash for the U Sports women’s soccer crown Sunday in Sydney, N.S.

The Griffins advanced with a 1-0 win in extra time Saturday over the UBC Thunderbirds.

Fifth-year forward Meagan Lemoine scored in the 96th minute for MacEwan.

The Spartans secured a berth in the title match with a 4-2 extra-time doubling of the Laval Rouge et Or in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Kathryn Harvey and Holland Stiel scored for Trinity in the 105th and 107 minutes respectively.

Both sides scored twice during a 15-minute stretch in the second half, which created a deadlock and the need for extra time.

After Trinity’s Anna Dunn scored in the 76th minute, Laval’s Mathilde Rousseau equalized in the 82nd and pushed the Rouge et Or ahead in the 87th.

Spartans midfielder Grace Van Den Brink knotted the contest again in the 89th.

UBC will play Laval for bronze Sunday.
