The Carolina Hurricanes dumped the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 tonight at Canada Life Centre.

Winnipeg trailed 3-2 after two periods but gave up a power-play goal early in the final frame to Vincent Trocheck.

The Jets failed to capitalize on a five-minute power-play midway through the third after Ian Cole caught Mark Scheifele with a knee.

Carolina outshot Winnipeg 34-18.

No one was injured in a fire in a vacant home on the 800 block of McDermot Avenue, but the city warned drivers to use caution because water used to extinguish the blaze had frozen in the street.

Crews were expected to remain at the scene for hours after the blaze was declared under control around 8:30 p.m.

Both neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precaution. The home is expected to be a write-off.

Crews were to be rotated on and off because of the cold weather. 

The city expected to use sand and de-icing agents on the ice that froze on the street.

The Winnipeg Jets are down 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes after 40 minutes tonight at Canada Life Centre.

Sebastian Aho scored early in the second period on a goal-mouth scramble for a 2-0 lead. The Jets’ challenged the play on a charge of goaltender interference but the play stood.

Just a minute later, Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers rifled his 10th goal of the year to trim the lead, and then Pierre-Luc Dubois registered his 13th with Winnipeg enjoying the man advantage at 16:06.

Martin Necas restored Carolina’s one-goal cushion with a power-play tally with just 20 seconds left in the middle frame.

The Hurricanes are outshooting the Jets 30-13.

Carolina defenceman Jaccob Slavin scored his first goal of the year just 30 seconds into the game.

Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck was far busier than his ‘Canes counterpart, Frederik Andersen and was terrific. The Hurricanes outshot Winnipeg 15-5. 

Winnipeg is looking for its third consecutive victory.

A man has been arrested after a suspect broke into a Portage la Prairie bank through the roof.

Portage la Prairie RCMP said on Tuesday that they rushed to the bank in the 100 block of Saskatchewan Avenue East when the institution’s alarm went off.

When officers arrived at 2:55 a.m., they found all the doors locked but they could see a suspect running inside the building.

The suspect was arrested after an officer spotted someone on the roof and saw him go down a ladder a few businesses away.

Kiefer Beaulieu, 30, has been charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit and possession of break and enter instruments. He has been detained in custody.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has extended its contract with Daniel Raiskin, its music director, through the 2025-26 season.

The agreement means the Russian-born maestro will be on the podium for the WSO’s 75th anniversary season in 2022-23 as well as a five-concert tour of the Netherlands in May 2022, which the WSO also announced Tuesday.

The orchestra orginally planned for the tour in 2020, the 75th anniversary of the European nation’s liberation from the Nazis, but the performances were postponed, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Raiskin began his tenure with the symphony in September 2018.

Riley Nash has been claimed by the Tampa Bay Lighting, according to several NHL reports.

The Winnipeg Jets had signed the free-agent centre during the offseason but placed him on waivers Monday.

Nash has no points in 15 games with the Jets. The Lightning will be the 32-year-old’s sixth NHL team. 

The province has detected its first case of the omicron variant, which has sparked widespread global concern.

Manitoba health reported Tuesday that one case of the B.1.1.529 (omicron) variant has been found in Manitoba. 

The infected person, who is experiencing mild symptoms, recently returned to Manitoba after travelling to a country in southern Africa. 

The province said it is conducting “aggressive” contact management.

Manitoba recorded 93 new COVID-19 cases and four additional deaths Tuesday.

The provincewide test positivity rate has risen slightly to 6.4 per cent. There are 152 COVID-19 patients in hospital and 32 of them are receiving intensive care, according to provincial data released Tuesday afternoon. 

A total of 1,338 Manitobans have died of COVID-19. No details about the four latest deaths were released Tuesday.

Of the 93 new cases, 51.6 per cent are among unvaccinated residents, although unvaccinated Manitobans account for less than 15 per cent of the overall adult population.

Doctors Manitoba says the province’s surgical and diagnostic backlog grew by an estimated 100 cases a day last month to a total of 152,000 procedures. 

"Physicians continue to be very concerned, especially as we see cardiac surgeries cancelled due to the strain on our healthcare system from the fourth wave," Doctors Manitoba president Dr. Kristjan Thompson said in a statement. 

"Making these patients wait and delaying their definitive care suggests that our health system is again at a tipping point."

During the entire pandemic period, there have been 208 fewer cardiac surgeries performed compared to normal pre-pandemic volumes, according to the physicians’ association. 

Doctors Manitoba estimates there are 152,116 backlogged cases, including:

• 56,181 surgeries;
• 42,931 diagnostic imaging procedures;
• 53,004 other diagnostic procedures, including allergy tests, endoscopies, mammograms and sleep disorder studies.

Winnipeg Jets defenceman Neal Pionk has a concussion and won’t travel with the team later this week.

Pionk remains on the roster and will serve his two-game suspension. He was suspended for a kneeing incident on Rasmus Sandin in Sunday’s 6-3 win over the Toronto Maples Leafs. 

Later, Leafs veteran Jason Spezza threw a hit that caught Pionk in the head.

Spezza has a hearing today with the NHL’s department of player safety.

Nathan Beaulieu will be paired with Dylan DeMelo tonight as the Jets host the Carolina Hurricanes.

Logan Stanley moves to the right side to play with Brenden Dillon, while Josh Morrissey and Nate Schmidt stay together.

RCMP have announced that Shirley Ducharme, a missing teenage girl from The Pas, has been safely located.

There were no injuries in an early morning fire at Strikers Deli and Meats at 832 Burrows Ave. Tuesday  

Firefighters responded at just past 6 a.m. and the fire was deemed under control 30 minutes later. There was no one in the building at the time of the fire. 

The fire remains under investigation.

A woman has been charged with homicide after a man died of injuries sustained in an assault last month.

Nancy Angela Whiteway, 33, was charged with second-degree murder three days ago. She was detained in custody at that time.

George Elie Houle died of his injuries on Dec. 1.

Houle, who police say was in his fifties, was assaulted at Main Street and Logan Avenue on Nov. 27 at about 11:45 a.m.

Members of the University of Manitoba Faculty Association have voted to ratify an agreement ending a 35-day strike.

The association said there were 881 votes in favour of the deal and 88 against, with 969 out of 1,264 members casting ballots.

“Our members were on strike to improve working conditions for faculty and learning conditions for students,” UMFA president Orvie Dingwall said in a news release sent Tuesday morning.

“This agreement will improve equity for the lowest-paid and most precarious UMFA members, while also ensuring that we can recruit and retain professors, instructors and librarians at the University of Manitoba.”

Classes are set to resume at the U of M this morning.
