Defenceman Owen Harris snapped a 2-2 tie at 17:04 of the second period and Landon Roberts added an empty-net goal with 75 seconds left in the game to lift the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 4-2 triumph over the Winnipeg Ice in WHL action at Wayne Fleming Arena Saturday.

It was the first win for Brandon in four meetings against the Ice this season.

Riley Ginnell scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season to help the Wheat Kings rally from an early 2-1 deficit.

“Halfway through the second period I thought they started outskating us and we just weren’t executing,” said Ice head coach James Patrick.

“Our passes weren’t on the tape and we weren’t getting pucks in deep and I thought they picked it up a notch and obviously were able to tie it and then get the go-ahead goal. Probably that 10-minute span was a difference in the game.”

Ben Zloty, with his fourth of the season, and Connor McClennon, with his league-leading 23rd, replied with goals for the hosts, who are first in the East Division with a 25-5-1-0 record.

Centre Matt Savoie recorded an assist on McClennon’s goal to push his league-leading total to 50 points.

“We’re not at the halfway point of the season but we’re close and you know, the guys have put in a lot of work and by no means are we satisfied, but up until this point it’s been a real good season,” added Patrick.

Gage Alexander made 20 saves for the Ice, which was playing its fourth game in five nights.

Ethan Kruger was excellent in the Wheat Kings net, stopping 28 shots. Brandon improved to 15-13-1-1.

Both teams have an eight-day break before meeting again on Monday, Dec. 27 at Westoba Place in Brandon.

Earlier in the day, the Ice announced the club will reduce spectator capacity to 50 per cent for home games between Dec. 21 and Jan. 11 to comply with recently announced provincial health orders.

However, Saturday’s game was played before 100 per cent capacity, with games scheduled for Jan. 3 and 8 to be played at 50 per cent.

BLUE-LINES: Winnipeg was scoreless in five power-play chances. The Wheat Kings went 0-for-2… Fifteen-year-old defenceman Jonas Woo played his second career game for the Ice since being chosen 18th overall in the recent WHL Prospects Draft… The three stars were: 1. Ethan Kruger, Brandon (28 saves); 2. Riley Ginnell, Brandon (two goals, plus-3); 3. Connor McClennon, Winnipeg (one goal, four shots).
