Winnipeg city council could soon expand its face mask requirement as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on.
A notice of motion suggests elected officials attending council or committee meetings in-person should remain masked for the duration of meetings aside from actively drinking or eating.
A mask mandate is already in effect throughout the council building. However, prior to Thursday, elected officials and public delegates were told they could take masks off inside council chambers when they were speaking, as long as they practised social distancing.
City clerks have already begun advising the public to keep their masks on.
Mayor Brian Bowman is formally calling for stricter mask rules for elected officials to be followed due to the spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
Council is expected to consider the motion next month.
