Three employers and a supervisor have been fined a total of more than $61,000 by the courts, after being prosecuted for separate violations of the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
Skyline Harvest Corporation, Double-You Builders, Diemo Machine Works, and supervisor Michael Christopher Noonan were all fined after appearing in court in the past few weeks.
Skyline was fined $6,500 and ordered to pay $1,500 directly to WSH to help educate the public about occupational injury and illness prevention, after pleading guilty to failing to develop safe work procedures.
Court was told an employee was working in a cornfield near Hanover when they were hit by the bucket of a 12-ton excavator on Oct. 9, 2019. The worker suffered a spinal fracture.
Double-You was fined a total of $21,500 for not immediately letting WSH know an employee had been injured in a workplace accident and not making sure a fall protection system was in place.
A worker on a roof near Sydney lost their footing and fell about six metres to the ground, hitting a telehandler on the way down, and suffering a spinal fracture Sept. 11, 2019.
Diemo was fined $30,000 after an employee had a finger amputated and left two others with crush injuries when a machine was activated when the worker’s fingers were between die plates Aug. 8, 2019.
Noonan was fined $1,550 after an overhead door jammed and he ordered a worker to sever the door cables Aug. 17, 2019. The door fell to the ground and pinned a worker underneath until being extricated by emergency workers. The worker suffered multiple fractures.
