Three things you need to know about the Blue Jays’ 2-1 win over Houston at Rogers Centre on Saturday:

Springer dingers

George Springer showed the Astros what they’re missing once again, leading off the bottom of the first inning with a home run into the Jays’ left-field bullpen and going a little deeper his next time up for his 19th career multihomer game. It was all the offence the Jays needed, and all they would get. Springer has now hit three home runs in three games this season against the team with which he won the 2017 World Series MVP award.

RISP-y business

In a game in which all the runs were scored via the solo homer, neither team had a hit with a runner in scoring position. The Blue Jays were 0-for-9 in such situations, the Astros 0-for-8.

It’s been a rough ride for the Jays with runners on second or third or both this season. They’re batting just .172 as a team with runners in scoring position, one of only three teams in the majors hitting under .200. The other two are the Orioles and Diamondbacks, who combined to lose 220 games last season.

Early exit

Manager Charlie Montoyo earned his second ejection of the season at the end of the fifth inning, coming out to make sure Vladimir Guerrero Jr. didn’t get into it with home plate umpire Nic Lentz after striking out looking for a second time in the game. The pitch Guerrero was rung up on was a strike, but the first pitch of the at-bat, which was called a strike, was not. And in his first at-bat two called strikes were out of the zone.

Montoyo came charging out of the dugout to make sure that it was he, and not Guerrero, who got the heave-ho. After all, any team has a better chance to succeed without its manager than without its best hitter.
