Jeanne Sutherland is named Nebraska women’s golf head coach

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former SMU and Texas A&M coach Jeanne Sutherland has been named to lead the Nebraska women’s golf program, the school announced Thursday.

Sutherland was associate head coach in 2021-22 and takes over the top job from Lisa Johnson, who led the program three seasons. Johnson left after her husband, John Johnson, was hired as Portland State’s athletic director.

Sutherland was at SMU from 2011-21 and at Texas A&M from 1992-2007. Sutherland led a combined 18 teams from those schools to NCAA regionals, with four advancing to the championship rounds. She was head pro at Vail Golf Club in Colorado from 2007-11.

“It is truly an honor to be named the head coach at Nebraska,” Sutherland said. “I have spent the past season building relationships with our players, which should help us continue the success that Coach Lisa Johnson built in recent years. I want to thank Coach Johnson for giving me the opportunity to serve as her assistant and continue to do what I love most.”

Sutherland in 2018 was named the inaugural winner of the Women’s Golf Coaches Association Kim Evans Award, which is presented to the college or high school coach, and Class A PGA Professional, whose teaching, coaching and involvement in the golf community has helped ensure the continued growth of the sport.

The Cornhuskers finished seventh in the Big Ten Tournament last month. Nebraska’s Kirsten Baete was fourth individually and will compete in the NCAA Stanford Regional starting Monday.
