PROSECUTORS have filed a direct indictment against a Winnipeg man accused of murdering his parents and a violent assault on a nurse at a city hospital.

Trevor Farley, 37, appeared briefly in court Thursday via video from The Pas Correctional Centre.

Police arrested Farley at the jail under the new indictment on Wednesday, Crown attorney Mark Kantor told Queen’s Bench Justice Colleen Suche.

Under a direct indictment, the case will proceed straight to trial, without a preliminary hearing.

Farley looked straight ahead and showed no change in emotion as the charges were read out to him in court.

Farley is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Judy Swain, 73, at her New Bothwell home last October, and with second-degree murder in the killing of his father, Stuart Farley, 71, at his Toronto Street home in Winnipeg.

Farley is also charged with attempted murder for a knife attack that same day on nursing supervisor Candyce Szkwarek inside Seven Oaks General Hospital, where Farley worked as a nurse.

No reasons for the direct indictment were put on the record Wednesday.

According to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, direct indictments can be sought in cases where delay may be an issue, where a preliminary hearing may be too time consuming and expensive, in instances when witnesses have been threatened or are in precarious health, or to ensure public confidence in the administration of justice, among other reasons.

Farley has not entered any pleas and no trial date has been set. His next court date is June 8.
