A company from Middlebro, Man. beat out brands from the likes of Walmart Canada and other major companies at a national retail award show.
Von Slick’s Finishing Touch won two trophies last week at the Canadian Grand Prix New Product Awards.
The Retail Council of Canada holds the ceremony to recognize products that have come to market in the past year.
“It feels kind of crazy, because you look at the size of the national brands that you’re up against,” said Landon Kroeker, co-founder of Von Slick’s.
The finishing butter snagged the award for innovation and originality, which all 121 Grand Prix finalists were eligible for. Walmart, Save-On-Foods and Kellogg’s products were among the competitors.
Von Slick’s also bested Saputo and Boursin, among other companies, in the dairy category.
“To make this product in Middlebro… and beat them was just, it was crazy,” Kroeker said. “It was quite surreal.”
The 29th annual awards happened in Toronto. Mijune Pak, a judge on both Top Chef Canada and Iron Chef Canada, was the night’s host.
The Von Slick’s crew brought their butter to Dragon’s Den in spring. The episode should air near the end of 2022, Kroeker said. Until then, he can’t talk about the results.
