Students returning to classes across Manitoba today should not be able to buy any packaged foods or other food products containing artificial trans fat in school cafeterias or vending machines, Education Minister Peter Bjornson declared this afternoon.

Long-expected amendments to the Public Schools Act were proclaimed into law last week, Bjornson said at Children of the Earth High School in the North End.

The legislated ban strengthens the province’s earlier requirement that school divisions have food and nutrition policies that offer healthy choices in schools.

Bjornson said there will be exceptions to the trans fat ban — lunches brought from home, and special days, such as bake sales or pizza or hot dog lunch days.
