The harder they fall

The Bombers will limp into Montreal this weekend with a 3-7 mark against the league leading Als who own an 8-2 record. It should be noted, however, that the Bombers beat the Alouettes 24-23 in Montreal late last season.

Bruised Brock

Bombers receiver Brock Ralph did not practise again on Wednesday and coach Mike Kelly had this to say about him: "His hip is beautiful shades of purple and green and yellow. We”re gonna take it day by day."

Mr. 1,000

Bombers running back Fred Reid is just 92 yards short of 1,000 on the season. Reid is first in the league with 908 rushing yards on 138 carries while B.C.’s Martell Mallett is second with 814 yards on 127 carries.

Steep learning curve for Bombers defensive recruit

The Bombers added defensive end Phillip Hunt to the practice roster and the 23-year-old former University of Houston standout had lots of questions about the Canadian game on Day 1. "He asked me where he was supposed to line up against the tight end," said coach Mike Kelly. "He started something like 52 games in college and had (31) sacks. And that’s a pretty high level."

Hunt is 6-foot-2, 260 pounds and has "the body type we like to have at defensive end," according to Kelly.

Up for grabs

THE Ticats released receiver Chris Davis on Tuesday. The 25-year-old Davis has 34 catches for 440 yards and two touchdowns this season. Those numbers would make him Winnipeg’s second most productive receiver behind Terrence Edwards and his 518 yards on 36 catches.

Just the fact, mam

BOMBERS newcomer Dudley Guice Jr. is likely going to get some time at slotback this Sunday against the Alouettes. Guice was recently cut by the Tennessee Titans but perhaps more impressively was offered a student internship by the FBI. Kelly was asked if Guice had the intelligence to catch on to the CFL game in a week. "He’s got an undergraduate degree where he had a 3.6 grade-point average from Northwestern University and he’s 12 hours short of a masters in global terrorism and the FBI has already offered him a job."

Speak your mind

TIGER-CATS linebacker Sasha Glavic went to work in sales in Toronto this summer after being cut by the Roughriders. "After the first day working a 9-to-5, I was like, ‘I can’t do this right now.’ I didn’t want to give football up," Glavic told the Hamilton Spectator. Glavic was recently activated by the Tabbies.

SASKATCHEWAN Roughriders wideout Jason Clermont has his own column in the Regina Leader-Post. Here are a few nuggets from his recent posting:

"Casey Printers needs to hire Glen Suitor to be his agent. Even so, he is not going to Winnipeg." (Suitor has remained in touch with Printers this season and has repeatedly suggested he’d be a fit in Winnipeg."

"Texting your weekend travel plans to friends and family is probably a better idea than "tweeting" them." (Clermont has a Twitter account and posted to his public that he wouldn’t be playing last weekend prior to the club releasing the news.)

Legend hunting

THE B.C. Lions signed former Seattle Seahawks receiver Michael Bumpus on Wednesday. Bumpus was a fine collegiate player who broke the career yardage record at Washington State held previously by CFL legend Hugh Campbell.
