The Winnipeg Blue Bombers issued a statement this afternoon stating that Dr. Ross Brown — who was convicted of possessing child pornography — has offered his resignation from the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame.

The offer has been accepted by the club’s board of directors, the statement said.

The team said that even with Brown’s resignation, it was still formulating a policy on how to deal with Hall of Fame members whose actions prompt calls for their dismissal from the hall.

MIKE DEAL / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS ARCHIVES Dr. Ross Brown’s name first surfaced for authorities in 2006 during an FBI probe.

Brown, 72, is a former president of the CFL football team who was given a 45-day sentence and three years of probation after pleading guilty to possessing more than 5,000 images and 30 videos of children as young as two engaged in explicit sex acts, including bondage and bestiality.

There were immediate calls from members of the public and victims’ advocates for Brown to be stripped of his status in the Bomber Hall of Fame after he pleaded guilty. But the team board postponed any decision for further study.

This afternoon’s statement from the team said the board’s selection committee will deal with the issue at its Sept. 30 meeting.
