Winnipeg mayoral candidate Rick Shone hopes streamlined rules can make it easier and quicker for local restaurants and bars to add patios.

If elected, Shone promises to revamp the city’s patio permitting process.

“We’re a city of short summers. I think it’s important to take advantage of this brief window and make patios and the outdoors more accessible for residents and visitors,” he said in a Monday news release.

If elected, Rick Shone promises to revamp the city’s patio permitting process.

“We need to set ambitious service standards to ensure projects like patios are approved as expeditiously as possible, making it easy for entrepreneurs to do business in our city, while maintaining safety and accessibility for all Winnipeggers”

The proposal calls for Winnipeg to: move patio permitting online with a “seamless and easy-to-use interface;” set standards to get patios approved as quickly as possible; set affordable permitting fees; create an annual guide to help businesses create outdoor areas; expedite the approval process for previously approved patio plans to resume in a new season; simplify rules on patio types and sizes; and amend bylaws to make it easier to build and expand patios on private property.

Shone, a small-business owner, said the proposed reforms should help restaurants and bars recover from the economic blows of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He is one of 14 candidates who have registered for the race to become Winnipeg’s next mayor. The election will take place Oct. 26.
