Nearly 400 local businesses will split more than $8 million in funding to offer professional development and training opportunities to their employees.

On Tuesday, the Manitoba government said about 5,500 workers will receive training to upgrade skills, funded in part through the Canada-Manitoba Job Grant.

“Funding for training initiatives contributes to the development of a skilled, adaptable workforce, which then addresses the recruitment and retention issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” provincial Economic Development Minister Cliff Cullen said in a news release.

The first intake period for the grant program closed June 10. According to the province, 375 businesses will receive more than $8 million in funding, with $5.7 million going toward employee training to help businesses adapt to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funding for the Canada-Manitoba Job Grant comes from federal labour market transfers intended to support employers’ workforce training needs. According to the province, Manitoba received approximately $97 million from Ottawa in 2021-22 through labour market development agreements and the workforce development agreements.

A second intake period is scheduled to open in September, with $2 million available to businesses and their employees.

Employers can apply for up to $10,000 per employee to an overall maximum of $100,000. Businesses with 100 or fewer employees can receive 75 per cent of eligible training costs, while businesses with more than 100 employees can receive 50 per cent of eligible training costs.

Training costs include tuition fees, mandatory student fees, textbooks, software and other required materials, and exam fees.
