Goldeyes clobbered

The Winnipeg Goldeyes’ chances at a division title took another hit after being doused by the streaking Kansas City Monarchs 7-2 at a sodden Shaw Park on Thursday night.

The Fish (46-37), now on a four-game slide, closed their nine-game homestand with a disappointing series sweep to the Monarchs (52-31), and now trail the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks by nine games in the West division.

“We just kind of hit a rough spell,” said Amos Ramon, Goldeyes hitting coach. “The good thing is we kind of peaked and this is the down wave and I’m hoping that next wave is going to be right into the playoffs.”

Alex Manasa took the bump for his 16th start of the season. He faced 24 batters, lasting 5.1 innings while striking out three, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

The Fish struck first. Second baseman Kevin Lachance hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the third inning to put the Fish up 1-0.

The visitors quickly thumped back, however, when Casey Gillaspie scorched a two-out pitch into the right-field corner for an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning to knot things up.

Monarch’s second baseman Ryan Grotjohn had the Goldeyes’ number in this one.

After a walk in his first at-bat, Grotjohn pulled a two-out solo shot over the right-field wall to nudge Kansas City ahead in the top of the fifth.

In his next at-bat, he sent another long ball over right-centre field to give the Monarchs a 4-1 advantage. It was the fourth-consecutive inning the Goldeyes had allowed a run.

The Goldeyes will now hit the road for their last trip of the regular season.

It’s a crucial 10-day, three-series trip that could ultimately cement their fate in the division and their standing in the playoffs.
